THE WEB OF CAVES

Featuring the second Doctor, Jamie, Ben and Polly, this adventure takes place between THE MACRA TERROR and THE ROUNDHEADS

A generic 'Second Doctor' cover, borrowing the title of one of Mark Gatiss's sketches from BBC2's Doctor Who Night. The central image is a screengrab from "The Faceless Ones".

GARDEN OF EVIL

Featuring the second Doctor, Victoria and Jamie, this adventure takes place between TWILIGHT OF THE GODS and THE DARK PATH (arbitrary placement)

A late addition to the Second Doctor gallery, mainly because I wanted to represent all three of the different companion line-ups from his era. This one is probably my favourite, even though I couldn't think of a more original title!

MISSION TO MONDARAN

Featuring the Second Doctor and Jamie (no continuity placement)

One of the fun things about these covers, as I said earlier, is indulging in fanboy continuity-gap-plugging, so 'Planet 14' inevitably came up. Initially it was just the title for a throwaway Second Doctor/Cyberman MA cover I created (see thumbnail, right), but I went back to the drawing board and designed "Mission To Mondaran". If you want to believe the DWM strip "The World Shapers", Planet 14 is Marinus (oh please!) but I took the name of the Cyberman colony which produced Kroton, the Cyberman with a soul in the DWM strips...

FREAK OUT!

Featuring the Second Doctor, Zoe and Jamie, this adventure takes place between THE MIND ROBBER and THE INVASION

This is the one that started it all! A cover created for a story I've been working on for a while (and not got very far with!) I've always thought it would be fun to pitch the second Doctor against the period of time his episodes were broadcast - the flower power era! Imagine a cross between "Beyond The Valley of The Dolls", "Bedazzled" and "The Macra Terror"... actually, it's not as bad as it sounds, honestly. The appropriately hippy-ish picture of Wendy comes from the Radio Times 10th anniversary special. I had to use a "Two Doctors" Frazer Hines owing to a lack of colour pictures of Jamie from the sixties.

SENSE OF DOUBT

Featuring the Second Doctor (no continuity placement)

More of an exercise in atmosphere than anything else... The title of a very foreboding and depressing David Bowie instrumental, combined with a pensive-looking still of Patrick Troughton and a gloomy background, conspired to create a suitably sinister and morbid 'dark Doctor' cover!

TEMPUS FUGITIVE: BOOKS ONE AND TWO

Featuring the Second Doctor, this adventure takes place between THE TEARAWAYS and THE NIGHT WALKERS

At the peak of my cover-creating phase, I had delusions of grandeur and decided to create a two-part cover a la "Interference". Again, the image came before any semblance of a story - I've always had a TARDIS fetish, and thought that a stone TARDIS would be impossibly cool, and so I created this interior with stone roundels and a sundial console.

The second cover complements Book One by featuring the exterior of my stone TARDIS - by chance I found an image of a building with police box-like doors and merged it with my earlier cover (the dome on the cover of "Thieves In The Temple" was at one point going to be the roof, but it didn't quite work).
